LAURA WARETINI – KIWI FERN #19
Canterbury women’s rugby league pioneer Laura Waretini was the tryscoring star on the Kiwi Ferns’ trail-blazing tour of Australia in 1995.
The Woolston winger was the only Canterbury representative in the Ferns’ ’95 touring party. Despite missing the first two matches (including the first Test), Waretini finished as the team’s top try-scorer with nine in the remaining five fixtures.
Waretini crossed for a try on debut against Sydney, bagged a double in a big win over Canberra, dotted down in the second-Test win over Australia, raced in for a hat-trick in a 48-0 rout of Queensland in Brisbane and added one more try in the tour-closing 36-0 defeat of Queensland on the Gold Coast.
