Canterbury trio drive Bulldogs’ bid for Jersey Flegg grand final glory

A trio of Canterbury products are set to play a major role in Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs’ pursuit of the Jersey Flegg Cup title as they prepare to line up in Saturday’s grand final against Penrith Panthers.

Northern Bulldogs five-eighth Bronson Reuben, Linwood Keas winger Chelden Hayward and Hornby Panthers centre Sosaia Alatini have been prominent in the fourth-placed Bulldogs’ charge through the under-21s competition playoffs.

After a 28-20 loss to the Panthers in week one of the finals, all three players scored a try in a 38-30 sudden-death win over Cronulla Sharks; Reuben also slotted five conversions.

The Bulldogs then stunned minor premiers St George Illawarra Dragons 32-16 in last weekend’s preliminary final at Kogarah Oval. Alatini and Hayward scored the first two tries of the second half to give the Bulldogs an unassailable 26-point lead. The classy Reuben added another four goals in the victory.

Reuben and Alatini, who was then a tryscoring machine in the second-row, teamed up in the Bulldogs’ 2023 Harold Matthews Cup (under-17s) triumph under the coaching of ex-Halswell Hornets player Shannon Rushworth.

With Canterbury Rugby League and Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs forming a development and pathways partnership from 2023-25, Hayward joined the club and played SG Ball Cup (under-19s) with Alatini and Reuben in 2024-25. Alatini and Reuben were Jersey Flegg regulars in 2025.

Alatini made the step up to senior football with the Bulldogs’ NSW Cup side this season, scoring five tries, producing seven try assists, nine line-breaks and 36 tackle-breaks, and averaging 112 metres in 14 appearances.

Linchpin Reuben has been a mainstay of the Jersey Flegg line-up in 2026, scoring 13 tries and 196 points in 24 matches. Hayward has scored 12 tries in 16 games for the under-21s side – as well as making three NSW Cup appearances, where he bagged a hat-trick against the Dragons.

The Bulldogs boys aren’t the only Canterbury juniors on show on NSWRL grand final day at CommBank Stadium.

Hornby Panthers prop Felix Faatili has been in outstanding form for Newtown Jets and has a key interchange role to play in the decider against top-of-the-table Penrith Panthers.

Contracted to Cronulla, Faatili – younger brother of current Wakefield Trinity Super League star Caius – has played 24 games this season for the Jets, who are the Sharks’ feeder team.
