CRL Rd 8 Preview: Opening-round revenge on Eagles’, Panthers’ and Greyhounds’ agenda

We’re back with a full program of senior footy after a truncated King’s Birthday weekend schedule – and three CRL Whitehead Plumbing and Gas Men’s Premiership teams are out to reverse opening-round losses when they host their Round 8 fixtures.

Eastern Eagles are out to atone at Wainoni Park against Papanui Tigers, who marked their return to Canterbury Rugby League’s top flight with a stirring 26-24 win at Papanui Domain in Round 1.

The second-placed Eagles are also looking to bounce back from their top-of-the-table clash loss to Linwood Keas last week, going down 30-10 after the scores were locked 10-all early in the second half.

The Tigers are coming off a 40-16 loss to Hornby Panthers, who are striving to parlay their first win of 2026 into making further inroads on the Massetti Cup ladder when they host Riccarton Knights at Leslie Park.

The Knights romped to a 44-4 victory in the teams’ Round 1 encounter at Crosbie Park, with Joel Leka bagging a second-half hat-trick.

Riccarton was humbled 36-4 last weekend in Greymouth – and the Greyhounds are at their Wingham Park fortress again in Round 7 with Halswell Hornets paying a visit following their bye.

The Hornets carved out a 38-20 victory over the Greyhounds in Round 1 after trailing early in the second stanza.

The undefeated Keas have their second bye.

All three CRL Whitehead Plumbing and Gas Men’s Premiership fixtures kick off at 2.45pm on Saturday, preceded by the corresponding CRL Sidekick Chartered Accountancy Canterbury Cup Conference League fixtures at 1pm.

The Hornets and Eagles – opponents in the past two Canterbury Cup grand finals – are hoping to preserve their share of the competition lead in their respective assignments, while the third-placed Keas have the bye and the Panthers head a quartet of teams separated by one point vying for fourth spot.

In CRL Division One action, Northern Bulldogs take their undefeated record to Macfarlane Park to take on last-placed Shirley Hawks (kick-off 2.45pm).

There’s an eastside derby with third-placed Eastern Eagles hosting second-placed Linwood Keas (1pm), while fourth spot is on the line as Ashburton Barbarians head up SH1 to take on Halswell Hornets (1pm).

Wainoni Park stages another derby in Round 4 of the CRL Happy Hire Women’s Premiership on Sunday, with Eastern Eagles and Linwood Keas kicking off at midday.

Shirley Hawks and two-time defending champs square off at Macfarlane Park at 1.30pm. Unbeaten ladder leaders Hornby Panthers have the bye.
