CRL Rd 7 Wrap: Panthers off the mark while Keas take out top-of-the-table showdown

Hornby Panthers and Greymouth Greyhounds carved out much-needed home wins in Round 7 of the CRL Whitehead Plumbing and Gas Men’s Premiership, while Linwood Keas kicked away late to win the highly-anticipated battle of the east and stay undefeated in 2026.

The Panthers belatedly opened their season account with an emphatic 40-16 victory over Papanui Tigers at Leslie Park.

The hosts got off to a flying start with three tries in the first 15 minutes and led 22-10 at halftime. The Tigers struck first in the second half through veteran fullback Ken Tofilau, but the Panthers pulled away with tries to Blake English, Carlos Heather and Johnny Joshua Fine, giving Archie Jacobs his first win since taking over as coach at Hornby.

A dominant second-half performance lifted the Greyhounds to their second win of 2026 – a 36-4 rout of visiting Riccarton Knights.

Experienced halfback Jordan Campbell scored two tries to steer Greymouth to a 12-4 halftime lead, while winger Cooper McLean bagged two of the Greyhounds’ four tries in a comprehensive display in the second 40 minutes.

The CRL Whitehead Plumbing and Gas Men’s Premiership top-of-the-table showdown largely lived up to its billing, but ultimately the Keas powered to a convincing 30-10 win over Eastern Eagles at Wainoni Park via a second-half surge.

The Eagles, unbeaten since Round 1, shot to an 8-0 lead in even time with tries to stand-off Taniela Leka and prop D’Angelo Tauti. But the Keas grabbed a 10-8 halftime advantage courtesy of tries to long-serving second-rower Puia’i Graeme Patu-Vaeaga’au and young centre Genesis Ah Kam-Sherlock.

Eastern levelled up the derby with a penalty goal early in the second half, before Linwood pushed out to 20-10 with winger Alofa Faaiva and hooker Elisara Vaifale getting across the stripe. The match was still in the balance until back-row tyro Lennox Tuiloma and winger Julius Mumuta dotted down in the dying minutes.

The portent of a big day at Leslie Park arrived via Hornby Panthers’ 60-12 defeat of Papanui Tigers in the CRL Sidekick Chartered Accountancy Canterbury Cup Conference League.

The Panthers ran in 11 tries, going on with the job after leading 26-6 at halftime.

In a bottom-of-the-table clash, Greymouth Greyhounds snatching a 22-all draw with Riccarton Knights with a late try that went unconverted. The Greyhounds had earlier thrown away a 14-4 halftime lead.

Eastern Eagles and Linwood Keas went into their clash as Premier Reserves co-leaders, but it was the Eagles who emerged from the round alongside Halswell Hornets at the top of the ladder with a 30-24 eastside derby win.

The Eagles trailed 18-12 at halftime but turned the tables on the back of a second-half hat-trick to Rawiri Ruri.
