CRL Rd 6 Preview: Knights’ Old Boys Day doubles as preliminary final rematch with Hornets
Riccarton Knights mark Old Boys Day with a huge clash against Halswell Hornets, while Round 6 of the CRL Whitehead Plumbing & Gas Men’s Premiership features another pair of pivotal encounters at Papanui Domain and Linwood Park.
The Knights staged their inaugural Old Boys Day in 2024 to coincide with the 20th anniversary celebrations of their most recent grand final victory – against Linwood in 2004.
The clubs head into Round 6 locked on six points in equal-third on the Massetti Cup ladder. Both sides bounced back from convincing losses to Linwood to beat Papanui in their most recent assignments: the Knights accounted for the Tigers 22-8 before sitting out last weekend with the bye, while the Hornets overcome the Tigers 30-4 in Round 5.
This encounter at Crosbie Park entails an extra edge after Riccarton’s 36-16 victory over Halswell in last season’s preliminary final – after the Hornets won both regular-season matches.

Old foes Linwood Keas and Hornby Panthers square off in Round 6 with the defending champs still undefeated and coming off an imposing 50-0 shutout of Greymouth Greyhounds on the West Coast.
Archie Jacobs’ youthful Hornby side is still searching for its first victory of 2026 and are coming off a heavy loss to Eastern Eagles – but a showdown with the team they faced in seven of the past 10 grand finals, as well as the Thacker Shield going on the line, is sure to inspire the proud Panthers.

Meanwhile, the Tigers and Greyhounds are both hunting their second win of the season when they lock horns at Papanui Domain.
The Tigers’ sole victory was against the Eagles in Round 1, while the Greyhounds defeated the Panthers at home in Round 2. The key for both sides will be maintaining consistency across the 80 minutes; recent defeats have been marked by competitive first-half performances before fading after the break.
All three CRL Whitehead Plumbing and Gas Men’s Premiership fixtures kick off at 2.45pm on Saturday, preceded by the corresponding CRL Sidekick Chartered Accountancy Canterbury Cup Conference League fixtures at 1pm.
The Hornets and Keas have a share of Premier Reserves lead after five rounds, with the Eagles and Greyhounds sitting two points behind.
In CRL Division One Round 6 action, Northern Bulldogs take their 5-0 record to Halswell Domain to take on the fourth-placed Hornets at 1pm on Saturday.
Eastern Eagles host Ashburton Barbarians (1pm) – who are coming off a massive home win over Linwood last weekend – while Shirley Hawks welcome the Keas to Macfarlane Park (2.45pm).
Sunday’s CRL Happy Hire Women’s Premiership Round 3 slate features a showdown between Hornby Panthers, who have already accounted for both of the 2025 grand finalists in the opening fortnight of the competition, and Eastern Eagles at Leslie Park.
Shirley Hawks come off the bye to face Linwood Keas at Macfarlane Park, with both sides searching for their first win of 2026.
The CRL Happy Hire Women’s Premiership fixtures kick off at 1pm on Sunday.
