RED AND BLACK REPORT 2026: EDITION NO.15

The Red and Black Report shines a spotlight on Canterbury Rugby League juniors featuring in Australia’s and Britain’s elite and lower-grade competitions.

A host of Canterbury products were in action in the latest round of the NSWRL and QRL competitions, as well as the NRL’s Magic Round and the latest round of matches from the Super League in the UK.

NRL

The Dolphins’ charge continued in Magic Round with a 32-10 win over South Sydney, while Aranui Eagles product Jamayne Isaako kicked six goals from seven attempts and made 147 metres from 15 runs.

Burnham Chevaliers junior Kodi Nikorima produced a try assist for the Dolphins but exited midway through the match with a hamstring injury.

West Coast product and former Halswell Hornets junior player Griffin Neame celebrated his 100th NRL appearance for North Queensland with an 18-12 upset of Sydney Roosters. The Kiwi Test forward racked up 14 runs for 103 metres and 21 tackles off the bench.

Playing his 50th game for the Roosters, Burnham Chevaliers junior Siua Wong toiled for 115 metres on 12 runs and 35 tackles in the second-row.

Hornby Panthers product Jordan Riki had a line-break assist, 10 runs for 75 metres and 40 tackles in Brisbane’s 42-12 loss to the Warriors. Halswell Hornets’ Tanner Stowers-Smith was an unused replacement for the Warriors.


NSW CUP

Hornby Panthers prop Felix Faatili played 25 minutes off the bench in Newtown’s 44-22 loss to Newcastle, making six runs and 17 tackles.

Linwood Keas hooker Makaia Tafua topped the Warriors’ tackle count (27) and made a line-break in a 46-4 defeat of Melbourne. Hornby sensation Bishop Neal made 74 metres from five runs in 29 minutes off the bench.

Riccarton Knights’ K-Ci Newton-Whare chalked up seven runs for 63 metres and 27 tackles as an interchange for the beaten Storm.


NRLQ SERIES

Halswell Hornets’ Meihana Pauling lined up at fullback for Gold Coast Titans and in a 36-18 victory over Brisbane Broncos in the fourth round of the NRLQ series, the QRL’s under-20s competition for the four Queensland-based NRL clubs.

The Titans are sitting on top of the NRLQ table. The competition consists of 12 rounds before a grand final on August 15.


SUPER LEAGUE

Hornby Panthers product and ex-Canterbury Bulls forward Caius Faatili had an unforgettable day out in Wakefield Trinity’s 58-10 demolition of Catalans Dragons, scoring three tries along with making 99 metres, 10 tackle-breaks and 15 tackles off the bench.

Burnham Chevaliers junior Jazz Tevaga – also starting on the interchange – scored his first try for the Wildcats, on top of 79 metres and six tackle-breaks.

Aranui Eagles product and ex-NRL utility back Daejarn Asi produced a try assist and made 22 runs for 108 metres and 12 tackles from five-eighth as Castleford Tigers outlast York Knights 24-18.
