CRL Rd 5 Preview: Unbeaten Keas head to the Coast as Hornets and Panthers search for form reversal at home

A trip to the West Coast looms for Linwood Keas in Round 5 of the CRL Whitehead Plumbing & Gas Men’s Premiership, while Halswell Hornets and Hornby Panthers both have crucial home assignments in their sights. Meanwhile, the Keas get their CRL Happy Hire Women’s Premiership campaign underway against impressive opening-round winners the Panthers.

Greymouth Greyhounds are searching for their second win from as many home games in 2026 when they host the undefeated Keas.

The Greyhounds bookended their 20-18 win over the Panthers at Wingham Park with spirited away losses to the Hornets and, last week, Eastern Eagles – scoring 20 points in both.

The Keas made another emphatic statement in Round 4, overwhelming the Hornets 64-22 at Linwood Park.

The Greyhounds can glean plenty of confidence from last season’s results against the eventual champs, however, pulling off a 20-14 opening-round upset at Wingham Park and holding their own in 24-14 and 36-24 losses at Linwood Park.

The Hornets will be striving to bounce back when they welcome Papanui Tigers to Halswell Domain.

Both teams have felt the full brunt of the Keas’ class over the first month of the competition and are both out to arrest a two-game slide, the Tigers going down 22-8 to Riccarton Knights in Round 4 after leading at halftime.

The Panthers sat out last weekend with the bye and will be hellbent on opening their 2026 account after an 0-3 start to the year. They host the Eagles, who have beaten the Knights, Hornets and Greyhounds in successive weeks after being tipped up by the Tigers in Round 1.

The ledger between the clubs was square in 2025: Hornby won 24-20 at Leslie Park, while Eastern responded 24-14 at Wainoni Park.

Coach Archie Jacobs’ move from the Eagles to the Panthers in the off-season – as well as Hornby stalwarts Devaun Thompson and Jordan Kamana heading to Eastern – adds another intriguing element to this clash.

All three CRL Whitehead Plumbing and Gas Men’s Premiership fixtures kick off at 2.45pm on Saturday, preceded by the corresponding CRL Sidekick Chartered Accountancy Canterbury Cup Conference League fixtures at 1pm.

The Hornets, Greyhounds and Keas have a share of the Premier Reserves competition lead, with the Tigers, Panthers and Eagles only two points adrift.

In CRL Division One, Linwood Keas head down SH1 to face Ashburton Barbarians at Robilliard Park, Halswell Hornets host Shirley Hawks and Eastern Eagles welcome undefeated Northern Bulldogs to Wainoni Park – with all three encounters kicking off at 1pm.

Linwood Keas, the 2025 runners-up, cooled their heels with the bye in Round 1 of the CRL Happy Hire Women’s Premiership – and they face a tough first-up assignment this Sunday at Linwood Park.

The Keas host Hornby Panthers, who fired a shot across the bow of their rivals by overpowering defending champs Sydenham Swans 32-12 last weekend.

The Swans will look to atone at their Bradford Park base against an Eastern Eagles outfit that defeated Shirley Hawks 66-6 in Round 1.

Both CRL Happy Hire Women’s Premiership fixtures kick off at 1pm on Sunday.
