CRL RD 2 WRAP: Keas, Eagles and Hornets fly in high-scoring weekend

Linwood Keas, Eastern Eagles and Halswell Hornets all carved out convincing victories in a high-scoring trio of CRL Whitehead Plumbing & Gas Men’s Premiership Round 2 fixtures on Saturday.

After sitting out the opening weekend with the bye, the Keas kicked off their title defence with a commanding 50-6 win over Papanui Tigers at Linwood Park.

Classy fullback Thomas Ruwhiu opened the scoring with the first of five unanswered tries in the opening half as Linwood built a 28-0 lead at the break. Powerful winger Julius Mumuta completed a hat-trick before the Tigers got on the board through centre Tamatoa Taylor Paku in the latter stages.

The Eagles bounced back from their Round 1 loss to the Tigers by subduing Riccarton Knights 30-16 at Wainoni Park.

A dominant first-half performance underpinned the victory, with the Eagles leading 20-0 at halftime. Veteran hooker Cyrus Timo-Latu scored the first try in each half before Blake Thompson led a late Knights rally with a brace of tries.

The Hornets took the spoils in the first westside derby of 2026, winning a seesawing clash against Hornby Panthers at Leslie Park 46-24.

The Panthers led 12-8 before a Hornets flurry propelled them to a 24-12 advantage at halftime. The home side closed the gap to 30-24 at one stage during the second stanza, but Halswell kicked away with the last three tries of the match.

Hornets five-eighth Hayden Thompson and Panthers second-rower Jaedon Wellington both scored three tries in an action-packed encounter.

The preceding CRL Premier Reserves matches all set the tone for the top-grade results that followed.

The 2024-25 Canterbury Cup grand finalists both improved to 2-0 records: Eastern Eagles overwhelmed Riccarton Knights 66-4 with Riley Williams scoring four tries, while Finn Davidson’s four-try performance helped Halswell Hornets turn a 16-all scoreline during the second half into a 30-16 victory over Hornby Panthers.

Linwood Keas got their Premier Reserves campaign underway with a 68-6 defeat of Papanui Tigers, featuring a hat-trick from veteran Leon Jarden.

The weekend’s tightest senior men’s encounters came in CRL Division One.

Linwood Keas outlasted Eastern Eagles 32-20 and Northern Bulldogs shut out Shirley Hawks 24-0 to earn a share of the competition lead after two rounds.

Halswell Hornets got off the mark with a 30-23 away win against Ashburton Barbarians.
