CRL RD 1 WRAP: Fairytale Premiership return for Tigers
Papanui Tigers made a triumphant return to the CRL Whitehead Plumbing & Gas Men’s Premiership, while a pair of first-time head coaches enjoyed victories in Saturday’s other Round 1 fixtures.
More than three and a half years since their last Massetti Cup match, the Tigers fought back from an eight-point halftime deficit to pip Eastern Eagles 26-24 at Papanui Domain – the club’s first win in the top grade since 2021.
The Eagles scored the first two tries before falling behind 12-10 when Ken Tofilau and Peter Loto crossed for the Tigers. Another pair of four-pointers – including Klayton Waikato’s second – put the visitors back in front 20-12 at the break.
Veteran Papanui forward Chris Bamford crashed over for the opening try of the second half, but Dontae Siaki responded for Eastern. Antonio Lemalu’s try with 15 minutes to go levelled the scores and Bradley White’s subsequent penalty goal proved the difference for the Ray Hubbard-coached Tigers, who were outscored five tries to four.
A second-half surge carried Halswell Hornets, coached for the first time by Kevin Te Hau, to a 38-20 victory over Greymouth Greyhounds at Halswell Domain.
Tries to Greyhounds duo Brett Rees and Jeremiah Lesoa bookended four-pointers to Hornets pair Toi Sepuloni and Tommy Moriarty in the space of five minutes, creating a 10-all halftime scoreline.
Jordan Campbell put Greymouth in front five minutes into the second stanza, but Halswell posted five unanswered tries – including a second for Moriarty (who also landed five goals) and back-to-back scores for Papa Mutu – to run away with the competition points.
Sean Spooner joined Te Hau as a winner on CRL Whitehead Plumbing & Gas Men’s Premiership coaching debut, with his Riccarton Knights outfit putting Hornby Panthers to the sword 44-4 to make it a cleansweep for the home teams.
The Knights scored four tries in each half at Crosbie Park; Joel Leka bagged a second-half hat-trick, while Jimmy Wihongi finished with 16 points from a try and six goals.

In CRL Premier Reserves’ opening round, Eastern Eagles began their pursuit of three straight Canterbury Cup titles with a 46-4 defeat of Papanui Tigers as Henare Kahukiwa helped himself to 18 points (two tries, five goals).
Hornby Panthers grafted out a 16-10 win over Riccarton Knights after trailing 4-0 at halftime, while 2024-25 grand finalists Halswell Hornets powered to a 54-10 result against Greymouth Greyhounds with Jordarn Harmer grabbing a hat-trick.
Recent CRL Division One additions Linwood Keas overwhelmed Shirley Hawks 60-10 with club greats Penitito Ilalio and Andrew Auimatagi notching doubles, and Aga Fiso and Iuma Mulitalo getting on the scoresheet.
Ashburton Barbarians overturned a 10-point halftime deficit to secure a 24-all draw with Eastern Eagles at Robilliard Park, while Cameron Godfrey and Ian Jones both scored first-half doubles in a 32-12 win over Halswell Hornets.
