The Red and Black Report shines a spotlight on Canterbury Rugby League juniors featuring in Australia’s elite and lower-grade competitions.
A host of Canterbury products were in action in the third round of the NSWRL’s junior competitions, the SG Ball Cup (men’s under-19s), Harold Matthews Cup (men’s under-17s) and Tarsha Gale Cup (women’s under-19s), as well as the opening week of QRL’s Mal Meninga Cup (under-18s) and the English Super League.
SG BALL CUP
Northern Bulldogs five-eighth Bronson Reuben opened the scoring for Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs as they overcame a slow start to overwhelm the Shannon Rushworth-coached Warriors 42-22 in Hamilton.

Linwood Keas’ Genesis Ah Kam Sherlock was at centre and Hornby Panthers’ Sosaia Alatini featured in the second-row for the Bulldogs, while Halswell Hornets’ Meihana Pauling lined up at fullback and Linwood Keas’ Rico Lemalie debuted off the bench for the Warriors.
Hornby centre Jackson Stewart helped Sydney Roosters to a 3-0 start via a 14-12 comeback win over St George Illawarra Dragons.
Papanui Tigers junior Ezekiel Paulo made his second appearance in the back-row for Manly Sea Eagles, but his team went down 32-22 to Wests Tigers.
Hornby’s Ezekiel Faga-Ieti celebrated in Newcastle Knights’ 26-14 win over Penrith Panthers, coming off the bench.
HAROLD MATTHEWS CUP
Sydenham Swans junior Evander Tafua, the first player to sign for Canterbury-Bankstown following its partnership with Canterbury Rugby League becoming official in 2023, achieved another milestone in Round 3 of the Harold Matthews Cup. After coming off the bench in the Bulldogs’ first two games, Tafua started at halfback in an 18-16 loss to Wests Tigers.
TARSHA GALE CUP
Hornby Panthers winger Manisha Seebeck’s blazing start to her Tarsha Gale Cup stint with Sydney Roosters continued, following up last week’s double with a fifth-minute try in a 24-8 defeat of St George Illawarra.
Linwood Keas’ Dejah Tuilau again lined up at centre and Hornby Panthers’ Kyra-Lee Westland started at lock in Penrith’s 26-4 loss to Wests Tigers.
MAL MENINGA CUP
Greymouth product Antonio Verhoeven, who turned out for Eastern Eagles 18s and St Bede’s in 2024, made a sizzling start to his stay with Burleigh Bears.
The centre scored two tries in a 28-12 victory over Ipswich Jets in the opening round of the Mal Meninga Cup.

SUPER LEAGUE
Aranui’s Daejarn Asi, a versatile backline performer in the NRL for North Queensland, the Warriors and Parramatta, is in the Super League with Castleford Tigers and lined up at halfback in a 19-18 Round 1 loss to Hull KR.
Ex-Hornby and Canterbury Bulls powerhouse Caius Faatili made his debut for Wakefield Trinity in a 14-12 victory against Leeds Rhinos, making eight tackles and three strong runs off the bench.
