The Red and Black Report shines a spotlight on Canterbury Rugby League juniors featuring in Australia’s elite and lower-grade competitions.

Canterbury products were in action in the latest rounds of the NRL, NSW Cup, Queensland Cup, Jersey and Flegg Cup (NSWRL under-21s).

 

NRL

Former Hornby winger and Super Rugby star Solomon Alaimalo made his sixth NRL appearance for Wests Tigers last Thursday, scoring a try and racking up 143 run metres in a 48-30 loss to North Queensland.

West Coast Kiwi and Halswell Hornets junior player Griffin Neame was promoted to the starting front-row for the Cowboys and made 110 metres and 25 tackles.

Burnham Chevaliers junior Jazz Tevaga was one of the Warriors’ best in a disappointing 30-20 loss to Parramatta. In a week where he revealed the club would not retain him beyond 2024, Tevaga made 13 runs for 124 metres and 24 tackles off the bench in just 37 minutes.

Aranui Eagles product Daejarn Asi was superb at halfback for the Eels against his former club, scoring a memorable first-half try, running for 89 metres and making 29 tackles as well as handling the bulk of the general play kicking duties.

Another Eagles junior, Jamayne Isaako, scored a try and kicked five goals in the Dolphins’ 40-34 loss to Sydney Roosters in Perth but failed to finish the match due to injury.

Named to play this week against the Warriors – along with Burnham Chevaliers junior Kodi Nikorima, who was ruled out of the Roosters clash – Isaako holds a seven-point lead in his pursuit of a second straight NRL pointscoring title.

Hornby Panthers product Jordan Riki toiled for eight runs and 21 tackles in Brisbane Broncos shattering 46-18 loss to Gold Coast Titans.

 

NSW CUP

Linwood hooker Makaia Tafua (four runs for 38 metres, 22 tackles) and Halswell prop Tanner Stowers-Smith (four runs for 43 metres, eight tackles) did their job off the bench in the Warriors’ impressive 46-10 victory over Parramatta.

The Warriors are on track for the finals, fifth on the ladder with 12 wins and a draw from 20 games.

 

QLD CUP

A major career milestone for Linwood premiership winner and Canterbury Bulls rep Etelani Pouli, who made his Queensland Cup debut off the bench for Western Clydesdales.

The ball-playing back made six runs for 43 metres and 19 tackles in a 46-0 defeat to Northern Pride in Cairns.

Veteran Redcliffe hooker and Northern Bulldogs product Sheldon Pitama was among the tryscorers as the Dolphins thumped PNG Hunters 46-14.

 

JERSEY FLEGG CUP

Versatile ex-Halswell back Oliver Lawry featured in the centres as Manly Sea Eagles held off Kaiviti Silktails 28-22 in Fiji.

After a couple of NSW Cup cameos, West Coast and Halswell junior Callum Donaldson returned to Flegg and came off the bench in Canterbury-Bankstown’s 36-18 loss to Canberra.
