CRL 2022 – ROUND 6 WRAP

CRL 2022 – ROUND 6 WRAP

Halswell Hornets and Eastern Eagles consolidated their Massetti Cup top-four places alongside unbeaten front-runners Linwood Keas with impressive performances on Saturday, while Riccarton Knights earned a share of fourth place with Northern Bulldogs via a high-scoring Bartercard Men’s Premiership Round 6 victory.

Halswell’s sizzling form since its one-point Round 1 loss to the Keas continued courtesy of 36-24 defeat of archrival Hornby.

The Hornets scored the first two tries of the match in front of big club day crowd at Halswell Domain, but the Panthers reduced the halftime deficit to four points with two tries to fullback Zinzaan Martin in quick succession.

The defending champs were slow out of the blocks again in the second half before staging a late rally, but the Hornets sealed a satisfying result with hooker Jacob Paul’s second try in the dying minutes.

The Eagles carved out a 38-26 win over Northern Bulldogs at Kaiapoi – their fourth in five outings so far in 2022. The visitors led 16-0 early but the Bulldogs pegged back two tries to reduce the halftime gap to four points.

Eastern dominated the second stanza, however, with centre Pio Ioane bagging a 10-minute hat-trick. Northern centre Riley Hurst grabbed a late double to give the Murphy Park scoreboard a bit more respectability.

Linwood overcame Celebration’s first-half resistance to run out 40-12 winners at Cuthberts Green.

The Lions posted the first try through Kasi Leka and trailed just 16-8 at halftime before being outscored five tries to one after the break. Keas front-rower George Faaiva and outside backs Erwin Sauni and Uili Uili finished with two tries apiece.

The Knights emerged from a run of three heavy defeats with a 60-6 win over Papanui Tigers, after racing out to a 40-0 halftime lead.

Centre Riki Bidois and forward duo Ihana Cox Winiata and Kolio Vailu’u all picked up try doubles, while goalkicking five-eighth Te Morehu Reweti finished with a 20-point haul.
