TERRY GILROY – KIWI #155

Winger Terry Gilroy was one of six players from fledgling Canterbury club Marist Old Boys to feature in New Zealand’s Test series triumph over England in 1924.

Bluff-born Gilroy played against England in the Canterbury side before getting a call-up for the series opener. His try after a thrilling passing movement sealed a 16-8 victory in front of 22,000 supporters at Carlaw Park.

The 22-year-old turned out in the second-Test win in Wellington but was replaced by clubmate Ted Fitzgerald for the third encounter in Dunedin.

Gilroy transferred to Waimari in 1927, while he later attained the rank of captain in the 28th Māori Battalion during World World II. He passed away in Riverton in 1982, aged 80.
