JACK ELLIS – KIWI #169

Edwin Horace ‘Jack’ Ellis represented Canterbury – including in the famous 6-4 victory over South Africa at Lancaster Park in 1921 – and South Island in rugby union before switching codes with Marist Old Boys.

Part of the Canterbury side which faced the 1924 English tourists and a non-playing member of the New Zealand squad during the Test series, Ellis featured in the inaugural interisland match the following season before being named in the national team to tour Australia.

The back-rower’s six appearances across the Tasman included the tour opener against NSW and two matches against a legendary Queensland combination he would square off against later in 1925 for Canterbury.
