JACK CAMPBELL – KIWI #270

Winger Jack Campbell, along with George Bellaney and Ces Davison, was one of three internationals to come from the Raikaia club, all of whom made the ill-fated tour to Britain with the 1939 Kiwis.

Campbell played rugby union in the North Auckland region before switching codes in 1939, joining Ponsonby. He transferred to Canterbury mid-season to work on the Rakaia railway bridge, however, and quickly earned a provincial trial and South Island selection.

The 22-year-old was named in the Kiwis’ squad, playing in the tour-opening 19-3 win over St Helens before it was abandoned following just one further fixture due to the outbreak of World War II.

Campbell joined the New Zealand Army in 1940, playing for English club Dewsbury while abroad before being posted to Crete.
