RED AND BLACK REPORT 2019: EDITIONS NO.12 & 13

Each week the Red and Black Report will keep you up to date with how our Canterbury Rugby League products are performing in Australia’s elite and lower-grade competitions.

NRL

It was a mixed outing for Kodi Nikorima in the Warriors’ 32-10 loss to Melbourne Storm on Saturday night.

The five-eighth laid on the hosts’ first try and scored their second, but came up with three errors and six missed tackles in an otherwise unhappy performance.

Fellow Burnham Chevaliers junior Jazz Tevaga missed the match with injury.

Aranui product Jamayne Isaako kicked three goals from as many attempts but had a modest tally of 55 running metres in Brisbane Broncos’ dismal 26-18 loss to lowly Gold Coast on Sunday.

Isaako has kicked 30 goals (eighth in the NRL) from 36 attempts in 2019 at an outstanding 83.3 percent success rate. But after scoring 11 tries in his sizzling 2018 rookie campaign, the winger is yet to cross the stripe this year.

CANTERBURY CUP NSW

Hornby old boy Fa’amanu Brown has starred at five-eighth in Canterbury’s back-to-back wins over Newcastle (20-18) and Blacktown (30-20) in the past two reserve grade rounds. The versatile 24-year-old scored a try in the latter victory.

Halswell junior Matt McIlwrick featured at hooker in Wentworthville’s consecutive losses to South Sydney and Newtown, making 27 tackles (one miss) and 28 tackles (no misses) respectively.

Cruz Topai-Aveai returned to the Jets’ interchange contingent for the 22-10 defeat of McIlwrick’s Magpies. The front-row tyro made five runs for 49 metres and 16 tackles in 21 minutes off the pine.

INTRUST SUPER CUP QLD

Sheldon Pitama had a 26-minute stint off the bench in Redcliffe’s 48-8 Round 12 thrashing of PNG Hunters. He was promoted to start at hooker a week later, playing 41 minutes of the Dolphins’ 28-16 loss to Norths Devils.

JERSEY FLEGG CUP (NSW U2Os)

Topai-Aveai, a Canterbury Cup regular in 2019, came off the bench in Cronulla’s 18-16 win over the Warriors in Round 12.

Daniel Sakisi started at prop and Sua Ailoilo came off the bench in the Bulldogs’ Round 12 loss to the Raiders. The pair kept their positions for yesterday’s Round 13 clash with the Dragons, which the Bulldogs won 22-20.

Joseph Taipari was at five-eighth for Parramatta’s 31-18 win over Souths in Round 12, but he missed the Eels’ 34-10 defeat to the Sharks on Saturday.

HASTINGS DEERING COLTS (QLD U20s)

An intermittent back-row bench option for Norths’ ISC team this season, Jordan Riki has started at prop in the Devils’ last two Under-20s matches – a 40-4 loss to CQ Capras and a 32-20 win over the Dolphins.

Winger Jalen Tangiiti-Turner scored Wynnum Manly’s only try in a 34-4 loss to Townsville Blackhawks in Round 12. He was on the flank again as the Seagulls bounced back with a 36-18 win over Ipswich Jets.

Griffin Neame scored the Blackhawks’ opening try off the bench against Wynnum Manly, while Daejarn Asi featured at fullback and Zinzan Martin returned on the wing. Martin scored a try in a 44-12 romp against Souths Logan Magpies on Sunday, which also saw Asi in the No.1 jersey again and Neame move into a starting prop role.
