NRL

Jamayne Isaako and Kodi Nikorima both posted points during week one of the NRL finals, but their Brisbane Broncos outfit was blasted out of the playoffs courtesy of a stunning 48-18 boilover at the hands of St George Illawarra.

Halfback Nikorima laid on the opening try of the match for David Fifita with a long break and scored himself as the Broncos attempted to stage a second-half comeback, while Isaako booted three goals. But their efforts were to no avail as the fire-breathing Dragons clinched an emphatic elimination victory.

Jazz Tevaga tried his heart out in the Warriors’ deflating, season-ending 27-12 loss to Penrith. The utility made 30 tackles and 15 runs off the bench, though he also gave away three penalties as the Panthers dominated the second half.

 

NRLW

Sui Pauaraisa, player of the match in Linwood Kea’s CRL women’s premiership grand final triumph a fortnight ago, created history by being the sole Canterbury player in the Warriors’ 10-4 upset of Sydney Roosters in the inaugural NRLW match.

The hooker/back-rower, who has been a member of the Kiwi Ferns’ wider training squad for the past two years, was a late inclusion on the Warriors’ bench for the premiership opener.

 

INTRUST SUPER PREMIERSHIP NSW

Moving back to hooker as some of Canterbury Bulldogs’ NRL regulars returned to the ISP, Fa’amanu Brown played a key role in a 34-24 semi-final win over Wyong Roos.

Brown scored the Bulldogs’ opening try as they booked a preliminary final date with the Dragons.

 

JERSEY FLEGG (NSW U20s)

Cruz Topai-Aveai emerged victorious in the battle of the Canterbury-bred forwards as his Cronulla Sharks thumped Sua Aiiloilo’s Bulldogs 30-10 in a sudden-death semi.

The Sharks face Mounties in Sunday’s preliminary final.

 

HASTINGS DEERING COLTS (QLD U20S)

Broncos-contracted Jordan Riki started in the second-row for Norths Devils as they prevailed 18-14 over Townsville Blackhawks to grab the first Hastings Deering Colts grand final spot.

The Devils will await the winner of this weekend’s Blackhawks-Northern Pride clash.
