NRL

After a string of outstanding appearances off the bench in the back-row, Burnham Chevaliers junior Jazz Tevaga played most of the Warriors’ 50-10 hiding at the hands of Melbourne on Anzac Day at hooker for the injured Issac Luke.

Tevaga topped the tackle count with 34 stops and had seven runs for 52 metres.

Aranui product and Brisbane Broncos sharpshooter Jamayne Isaako kicked four goals in a vital 24-20 win over South Sydney on Thursday night.

The rookie winger has scored three tries and booted 23 goals for a 2018 tally of 58 points, kicking at the impressive success rate of 82.1 percent.

Meanwhile, Kodi Nikorima scored an important solo try in the Broncos’ victory after earlier having one disallowed. Nikorima played 50 minutes off the bench at hooker and in the halves.

Arguably the biggest NRL highlight of the weekend for Canterbury rugby league fans, though, was the first top-grade appearance of the season for Riccarton Knights old boy Lewis Brown.

The veteran utility has been on the outer at Manly so far this season, but returned to the bench for the injury-ravaged club’s clash with Newcastle on Friday night and played most of the game at hooker after five-eighth Lachlan Croker’s injury forced a reshuffle.

Brown looked sharp at dummy-half – despite playing lock at ISP level this season – and finished with 16 tackles and four runs for 49 metres. The interchange outing was his 197th game in the NRL.

Pita Godinet started at hooker in Wests Tigers’ 24-22 loss to Parramatta on Sunday, racking up 20 tackles.

 

INTRUST SUPER PREMIERSHIP NSW

Hornby junior Fa’amanu Brown pushed his case for an NRL recall with a 22-point haul in Canterbury Bulldogs’ 44-14 defeat of Blacktown Workers. The hooker scored a try in each half and kicked seven goals.

Halswell old boy Matt McIlwrick started at hooker in Western Suburbs Magpies’ 28-6 loss to Wentworthville Magpies, stuck behind fellow Christchurch product Godinet and young gun Jacob Liddle for a run in first grade.

 

INTRUST SUPER CUP QLD

Predominantly a centre during his time at Mackay, Nathan Saumalu started on the wing and scored a try in the Cutters’ 52-24 loss to Tweed Heads Seagulls.

Sheldon Pitama was at hooker as Redcliffe Dolphins went down 22-16 to Ipswich Jets.

 

JERSEY FLEGG (NSW U-20s)

Patrick Elia returned to the Warriors’ Flegg side, coming off the bench in a 16-10 loss to Cronulla Sharks, who featured Cruz Topai-Aveai in the front-row at North Harbour Stadium.

Sua Ailoilo was part of the Bulldogs’ interchange contingent in a 60-20 demolition of the Sea Eagles at Belmore Sports Ground on Saturday.

 

HASTINGS DEERING COLTS (QLD U-20s)

Jalen Tangiiti-Turner’s Wynnum Manly Seagulls side went down 19-4 to a Souths Logan Magpies outfit captained by Otago’s Rory Ferguson.

 

MAL MENINGA CUP (QLD U-18s)

Jordan Riki (main photo) played at prop and scored a try in Norths Devils’ Mal Meninga Cup semi-final defeat of Mackay Cutters. The Devils will square off against the Magpies in this weekend’s final.

QRL’s match report was glowing in its appraisal of Riki’s performance:

Towering Jordan Riki was a mountain of strength for the victors, earning metres not only with his strong charges, but also by drawing the Cutters into a series of penalties as they tried to slow his progress.

Riki’s time off the field coincided with Mackay’s upsurge in fortunes and they were a drastically better side in the second stanza.
