NRL

Aranui Eagles junior Jamayne Isaako was the hero of Brisbane’s dramatic 9-7 win over Wests Tigers on Friday night.

Playing in just his fourth NRL game, the winger kicked four-from four (taking his season tally to eight goals from as many attempts) – including the golden point match-winner – and slotted a clutch field goal in the dying minutes of regulation time.

Isaako also contributed 116 metres from 15 carries to emerge as arguably the standout discovery of 2018 so far. Broncos halfback Kodi Nikorima also contributed strongly in the tense clash, making 19 tackles.

Meanwhile, Canterbury products Matt McIlwrick and Pita Godinet were among the defeated Tigers’ best.

McIlwrick started at hooker after coming off the bench in the first two rounds, making 20 tackles and three incisive runs from dummy-half. Godinet was injected at hooker from the interchange and reeled off 29 tackles in a tireless display.

McIlwrick was also the subject of a 7 News story in the lead-up to the match.

Hornby old boy Fa’amanu Brown made a brief but successful club debut for the Canterbury Bulldogs against Penrith on Friday. Brown played the first two rounds in the ISP but was promoted to the Bulldogs’ NRL bench for the clash with the Panthers, providing real spark at dummy-half when he came on for Michael Lichaa in the second half of a 20-18 victory.

Another ex-Canterbury junior to get their first taste of NRL footy in 2018, Jazz Tevaga was superb in the Warriors’ heart-stopping win over Canberra.

This Warriors Life website had this to say about Tevaga’s performance off the bench: “Defied the sceptics with an outstanding performance off the bench. A constant ball of energy, Tevaga made 32 tackles and 113 metres in an effort that demanded first-grade retention.”

 

INTRUST SUPER PREMIERSHIP NSW

Currently out of favour with Manly first grade coach Trent Barrett, Lewis Brown was the only Canterbury product running around in the ISP on the weekend.

Brown featured at lock in Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles’ 28-16 victory over Newtown Jets.

 

INTRUST SUPER CUP QLD

Mackay Cutters centre Nathan Saumalu enjoyed bragging rights over a couple of fellow former Rockcote Canterbury Bulls reps after his side pipped Central Queensland Capras 18-16. Ken Tofilau started on the wing and Phil Nati came off the bench for the beaten Capras.

Sheldon Pitama returned at hooker for Redcliffe Dolphins as they accounted for Wynnum-Manly 36-20 on Sunday.

 

JERSEY FLEGG (NSW U-20s)

Sua Aiiloilo and Daniel Sakisi again came off the bench for the Canterbury Bulldogs’ Under-20s side  as they were edged out 12-6 by Wyong Roos.

Patrick Elia played his third straight game in the centres for the Warriors’ Jersey Flegg outfit. His side went down 17-16 to Penrith to remain winless.

Joseph Taipari was at five-eighth for Parramatta’s 22-14 loss to Newcastle, while Cronulla front-rower Cruz Topai-Aveai tasted victory 18-16 over Manly.

 

HASTINGS DEERING COLTS (QLD U-20s)

Former Papanui youngster and Canterbury age-group rep Jalen Tangiiti-Turner played on the wing as Wynnum-Manly Seagulls Under-20s chalked up another win, this time accounting for Redcliffe 20-12.
