Flashback Friday: Todd Breaks Try Drought In 100th Game

With the 2018 NRL season in full swing, Flashback Friday celebrates a landmark try for one of Canterbury Rugby League’s finest exports to Australia.

Wooden spooners Gold Coast Seagulls chalked up a rare win over fellow battlers South Sydney in Round 12 of the 1992 premiership, and the victory was that little bit sweeter for Kiwi front-rower Brent Todd.

The Linwood star debuted for New Zealand in 1985 and was subsequently snapped up by the Canberra Raiders, featuring in four grand finals in a five-season stay at the club (1987-91) and winning premierships in 1989-90.

But in 91 games for the Green Machine, Todd failed to score a try.

He had crossed for his maiden Test four-pointer against France – his 18th appearance – in 1991 before linking with the Seagulls the following season.

Todd ran out for his 100th first grade appearance in the Sydney Football Stadium clash with the Rabbtiohs in ’92, and ran onto a brilliant pass from legendary five-eighth Wally Lewis – the Seagulls’ captain-coach – to break his famous try drought.

It would be the only try in Todd’s 125-game premiership career, though he added a second try to his Kiwis tally less than a month later when he crossed against Great Britain at Mt Smart Stadium.

The 28-Test veteran hung up the boots at the end of 1993.
