CRL Rd 14 Preview: Last finals spot hinges on Knights-Greyhounds showdown
All eyes are on the vital final-round showdown between Riccarton Knights and Greymouth Greyhounds this Saturday, while there’s also a top-of-the-table semifinal dress rehearsal and a battle to avoid the wooden spoon to close out the CRL Whitehead Plumbing & Gas Men’s Premiership regular season.
The third-placed Knights are already assured of their place in the finals – but a loss of 22 points or more at Crosbie Park would see the Greyhounds leapfrog them on the ladder and earn a home elimination semi.
Meanwhile, the Greyhounds must win to at least secure fourth place and another visit to Riccarton in week one of the finals. Halswell Hornets are two competition points behind in fifth but have a bye and a superior for-and-against; a Knights victory would catapult the Hornets into the playoffs.
Riccarton defeated Halswell 18-6 in Round 13, while Greymouth came away with a vital 46-6 win over Papanui. The Greyhounds carved out an emphatic 36-4 victory against the Knights at Wingham Park in Round 7.
The Keas and Eagles are already locked into the top two spots in the Massetti Cup standings, but this Saturday’s derby at Linwood Park provides a valuable opportunity to take momentum and a psychological edge into the following week’s major semi at the same venue.
Defending champs the Keas are looking to complete an undefeated home-and-away campaign, having won all 13 games so far this season by 20-plus margins. The Eagles have not lost since going down to the Keas 30-10 at Wainoni (after trailing just 10-8 at halftime) in Round 7.
The rivalry at the other end of the ladder will be equally fierce as Papanui Tigers and Hornby Panthers bring their campaigns to a close at Papanui Domain.
The winner will consign the loser to a bottom-place finish. The Panthers have notched just one win in 2026 – but that was a 40-16 result against the Tigers at Leslie Park, while they have scored at least 22 points in each of their five outings since.
All three CRL Whitehead Plumbing and Gas Men’s Premiership fixtures kick off at 2.45pm on Saturday, preceded by the corresponding CRL Sidekick Chartered Accountancy Canterbury Cup Conference League fixtures at 1pm.
The top three qualifiers for the playoffs are already locked in, but there’s still potential for changes in finishing positions.
The front-running Eagles are two points ahead of the Keas but could be usurped for top spot in this weekend’s derby, with the Keas boasting a superior points differential. Meanwhile, if the Eagles win, the Hornets – who have a better for-and-against than the Keas – will jump to second via their two points for the bye.
The Panthers, Greyhounds and Tigers are all in the mix to finish the season in fourth.
Second plays third in the regular season-closing Round 12 of CRL Division One with Linwood Keas hosting Eastern Eagles.
If the Eagles lose, Ashburton Barbarians can leapfrog them into third place – and the Conference playoffs – with a win as Halswell Hornets make their way down to Robilliard Park.
Meanwhile, Northern Bulldogs have already effectively wrapped up top spot ahead of a clash with fifth-placed Shirley Hawks at Macfarlane Park.
All three CRL Division One fixtures get underway at 1pm on Saturday.
Round 9 of the CRL Happy Hire Women’s Premiership features a vital eastside derby, with fourth-placed Eastern Eagles hosting second-placed Linwood Keas at Wainoni Park.
In Sunday’s other fixture, third-placed Sydenham Swans square off against Shirley Hawks at Macfarlane Park.
Earlier this season, the Keas edged the Hawks 20-16, while the Swans overwhelmed the Hawks 52-4.
Both CRL Happy Hire Women’s Premiership matches kick off at 1pm; the competition’s regular-season program wraps up next weekend.
