CRL Rd 13 Preview: Crunch time as top-four rivals lock horns in penultimate round

The battle for top-four spots goes into overdrive in the penultimate round of the CRL Whitehead Plumbing and Gas Men’s Premiership.

The winner of the clash between Halswell Hornets and Riccarton Knights at Halswell Domain will finish the weekend in third spot.

The third-placed Knights have a two-point break on the chasing pack, but the fourth-placed Hornets have a superior for-and-against.

The Hornets are coming off a 60-0 rout of Papanui Tigers in Round 12. The Knights edged out the Tigers 22-18 with a late try in Round 11 before getting the bye last week.

When the clubs met in Round 6, Riccarton overcame a halftime deficit to carve out an emphatic 42-20 victory at Crosbie Park with Blake Thompson scoring a second-half hat-trick.

The other crunch match of the round sees fifth-placed Greymouth Greyhounds host Papanui Tigers at Wingham Park.

The Greyhounds are level on competition points with the Hornets but are 92 points worse off on for-and-against. It’s must-win for the hosts, who have shown fight in the past fortnight in losses to top-two opposition Eastern (34-26) and Linwood (38-10).

The Tigers head over Arthur’s Pass with the psychological edge of winning the teams’ Round 6 encounter at Papanui Domain 14-12.

The Keas have effectively already wrapped up the Massetti Cup, but they will be eager to maintain their unbeaten record when they head to Leslie Park in Round 13 to take on Hornby Panthers.

Linwood has won every game this season by a margin of 20-plus points – including a 64-4 defeat of Hornby seven weeks ago at Linwood Park.

Though regular wins have eluded the Panthers, they have scored at least 22 points in their past five games and will be fired up to put on a show in their last home game of 2026.

All three CRL Whitehead Plumbing and Gas Men’s Premiership fixtures kick off at 2.45pm on Saturday, preceded by the corresponding CRL Sidekick Chartered Accountancy Canterbury Cup Conference League fixtures at 1pm.

The second-placed Keas’ encounter with the fourth-placed Panthers could have big ramifications on the finals picture, while the Greyhounds and Tigers can stay alive in the top-four race with a win at Wingham Park, and the Hornets will look to remain in the frame for a top-two finish when they face the bottom-placed Knights.

Second plays third in Round 12 of CRL Division One with Linwood Keas hosting Eastern Eagles.

Meanwhile, Northern Bulldogs can effectively wrap up top spot with a win over fifth-placed Shirley Hawks at Macfarlane Park.

Ashburton Barbarians are looking to consolidate fourth spot with one round remaining as Halswell Hornets make their way down to Robilliard Park.

All three CRL Division One fixtures get underway at 1pm on Saturday.

Round 9 of the CRL Happy Hire Women’s Premiership features a vital eastside derby, with fourth-placed Eastern Eagles hosting second-placed Linwood Keas at Wainoni Park.

In Sunday’s other fixture, third-placed Sydenham Swans square off against Shirley Hawks at Macfarlane Park.

Earlier this season, the Keas edged the Hawks 20-16, while the Swans overwhelmed the Hawks 52-4.

Both CRL Happy Hire Women’s Premiership matches kick off at 1pm.
