CRL hosts NZRL leadership to discuss future of the game

Canterbury Rugby League welcomed newly appointed New Zealand Rugby League Chief Executive Andrea Nelson and NZRL Board Chair Justin Leydesdorff to Ōtautahi Christchurch on Thursday.

CRL Chief Executive Malcolm Humm and CRL Board Chair Janelle Riki-Waaka met with Nelson and Leydesdorff for a productive day of discussions focused on the growth and development of the game.

“The visit provided a valuable opportunity for CRL and NZRL to discuss the future direction of rugby league in New Zealand, including the Connected Game Plan and NZRL’s strategic priorities,” Humm said.

“Canterbury is experiencing strong momentum and we believe our region has a great deal to contribute to the national rugby league landscape. It was encouraging to begin these conversations and explore opportunities to work together to continue growing the game.”

CRL, in conjunction Christchurch City Council and Venues Ōtautahi, hosted tours of Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub and One New Zealand Stadium (Te Kaha) as part of visit – showcasing our city’s top-class sporting facilities.

The 2025 NZRL National Youth Tournament was held at Ngā Puna Wai – to widespread acclaim – while One New Zealand Stadium will host a historic 2026 Rugby League World Cup double-header in October, featuring the New Zealand Kiwis versus Cook Islands and the New Zealand Kiwi Ferns versus France. Humm said the venue tours left a strong impression on the NZRL delegation.

“We believe NZRL were very impressed with the quality of the infrastructure Christchurch has to offer.

“These venues position our city well to host more national tournaments and international rugby league fixtures in the future, creating exciting opportunities for our players, clubs and supporters.”

The visit was a valuable opportunity for CRL and NZRL to strengthen their relationship as the organisations collaborate in fostering rugby league’s growth and ensuring the game is the best it can be for all participants.
