CRL Rd 9 Preview: Derbies, top-four showdowns and GF rematches in huge weekend

The second 2026 instalment of Canterbury Rugby League’s westside derby headlines Round 9 of the CRL Whitehead Plumbing & Gas Men’s Premiership, while Riccarton Knights face a crucial home assignment as the finals race heats up and Papanui Tigers host the unbeaten competition leaders. Meanwhile, the fifth round of the CRL Happy Hire Women’s Premiership features a long-awaited grand final rematch.

Halswell Hornets took the spoils in Round 2 at Leslie Park – turning a 24-all halftime scoreline into a 46-24 win – so Hornby Panthers will be especially keen to turn the tables this Saturday at Halswell Domain.

The Hornets, teetering after a loss in Greymouth last weekend, are looking to consolidate their top-four standing as well as mark their Old Boys Day in style in a clash of the 2024 grand final adversaries.

The third-placed Knights (48-26 versus the Panthers) and second-placed Eastern Eagles (58-24 versus Papanui Tigers) are coming off big wins ahead of their vital showdown at Crosbie Park. Just two points separate the teams on the Massetti Cup ladder.

The Eagles claimed a 30-16 result at Wainoni Park in Round 2.

The Tigers felt the full might of Linwood Keas on the road in April, going down 50-6. That underlines the task at hand at Papanui Domain as Ray Hubbard’s 2-5 Tigers strive to stay in the finals hunt.

Coming off their second bye, the Keas are sailing towards another Massetti Cup minor premiership success, winning all six matches so far by an average margin of 40 points.

All three CRL Whitehead Plumbing and Gas Men’s Premiership fixtures kick off at 2.45pm on Saturday, preceded by the corresponding CRL Sidekick Chartered Accountancy Canterbury Cup Conference League fixtures at 1pm.

The Hornets and Eagles hold a share of the Canterbury Cup lead with the Keas one win adrift. The Panthers sit in outright fourth, two points ahead of the Tigers, and three ahead of the Greyhounds and Knights.

In Round 8 of CRL Division One, third-placed Eastern Eagles host fifth-placed Halswell Hornets at Wainoni Park at 1pm.

Fourth-placed Ashburton Barbarians and bottom-placed Shirley Hawks lock horns at 2.30pm at Robilliard Park – with both teams coming off a win.

Northern Bulldogs are hoping to bounce back from their first loss of the season – a shock 46-12 defeat to the Hawks – when they welcome second-placed Linwood Keas to Murphy Park for a 2.45pm kick-off.

The CRL Happy Hire Women’s Premiership heats up in Round 5 as the 2025 grand final opponents square off for the first time this season at Bradford Park.

Sydenham Swans defended their title with a 24-22 victory over Linwood Keas in an epic 2025 decider. Both sides will be eager to stamp their 2026 credentials after going down to Hornby Panthers during the early rounds.

The undefeated Panthers take on Shirley Hawks at Macfarlane Park this weekend.

Both CRL Happy Hire Women’s Premiership games kick off at 1pm on Sunday.
