CRL Rd 4 Preview: Men’s contenders jockey for position while Women’s comp gets underway
There’s pivotal matches at Linwood Park, Wainoni Park and Papanui Domain on the CRL Whitehead Plumbing and Gas Men’s Premiership Round 4 docket this Saturday, while the CRL Happy Hire Women’s Premiership gets underway for season 2026 on Sunday.
Following big wins over Papanui Tigers (50-6) and Riccarton Knights (36-12), Linwood Keas will look to maintain their status as the only undefeated team in CRL Whitehead Plumbing and Gas Men’s Premiership – and retain the Thacker Shield – when they host Halswell Hornets.
The Hornets won their first two matches against Greymouth Greyhounds and Hornby Panthers with strong second-half performances, but they let a halftime lead slip in a 28-20 loss to Eastern Eagles in Round 3.
The regular-season series between the clubs was split one win apiece in 2025, but the Keas romped to a 30-4 semi-final victory on their way to the title.
The Eagles have bounced back strongly from an opening-round loss to the Tigers, seeing off the Knights and Hornets in the past fortnight. But they have something of a bogey to overcome when they welcome the Greyhounds to Wainoni Park.
The Greyhounds – who are coming off a nail-biting 20-18 home win over the Panthers in Round 3 after leading 20-0 at halftime – won both games against the Eagles in 2025: 38-18 in Greymouth and 40-22 on the road.
The Knights are striving to arrest a two-game slide in Round 4, having followed up a big first-up win over the Panthers with consecutive losses to the Eagles and Keas. They held the Keas to an 18-12 halftime scoreline before being overrun in the second stanza.
Riccarton travels to take on a Papanui side coming off the bye. The euphoria of the Tigers’ Round 1 win over the Eagles dissipated somewhat courtesy of a heavy loss at Linwood Park, but they have already proven Papanui Domain will be a difficult venue for visiting teams to leave with the Massetti Cup points.
All three CRL Whitehead Plumbing and Gas Men’s Premiership fixtures kick off at 2.45pm on Saturday, preceded by the corresponding CRL Sidekick Chartered Accountancy Canterbury Cup Conference League fixtures at 1pm.
Halswell Hornets are undefeated at the top of the Premier Reserves table, having lapped previous unbeaten defending champs Eastern Eagles last weekend.
Riccarton Knights are also hoping to bounce back from a heavy loss to Linwood Keas.
Northern Bulldogs are setting the pace in the CRL Division One Conference and looking to improve to a 4-0 record when they host Ashburton Barbarians.
Elsewhere, Linwood Keas and Halswell Hornets square off after both suffered Round 3 losses, while Eastern Eagles and Shirley Hawks are both chasing back-to-back wins in their Wainoni Park clash.
All three CRL Division One fixtures get underway at 1pm on Saturday.
Boasting a fresh naming rights sponsor for 2026, the CRL Happy Hire Women’s Premiership gets underway this Sunday, May 10.
The five-team CRL Happy Hire Women’s Premiership commences with a blockbuster clash between two-time defending champs Sydenham Swans and 2024 grand finalists Hornby Panthers at Bradford Park, while Eastern Eagles host Shirley Hawks at Wainoni Park.
Both matches kick off at 1pm on Sunday. Perennial contenders and 2025 runners-up Linwood Keas have the Round 1 bye.
