CANTERBURY TRIO RECOGNISED IN 2024 NZRL GRASSROOTS AWARDS
Three of Canterbury Rugby League’s highest achievers and hardest workers have been recognised in New Zealand Rugby League’s 2024 Grassroots Awards.
Bishop Neal was named Male Junior Player of the Year, Jack Feavers collected the Match Official of the Year award and Cameron Tukapua was honoured as the Pirtek Volunteer of the Year.
Currently rising through the rugby league ranks as a member of the Warriors’ SG Ball team, Hornby Panthers product Neal’s extraordinary 2024 included winning the Boys’ Premiership MVP award in helping St Thomas’ of Canterbury College take out back-to-back NZSST titles, before starring for the NZRL Schools team against the NZRL Clubs side.
Shortlisted for the Match Official of the Year gong in 2023, Feavers was a standout winner after refereeing his second straight CRL Whitehead Plumbing & Gas Men’s Premiership grand final, a slew of marquee NZRL tournament matches, and at NSWRL Harold Matthews Cup, SG Ball Cup and Jersey Flegg Cup levels. He also ran the touchlines in NSW Cup.
Blenheim-based Feavers’ dedication to refereeing sees him rack up tens of thousands of kilometres on the road to control matches in Canterbury – but he is reaping the rewards of that commitment and is destined for higher honours.

Eastern Eagles president Tukapua is a credit to his club and community, embodying the values NZRL grassroots is built on. Aside from his tireless administrative efforts to keep the Eagles running, Tukapua’s commitment is showcased through coaching teams, helping foster young talent in the game, engaging wider family and support networks, and promoting health and fitness.
In congratulating Tukapua, Chris Bourke, CEO of Pirtek, describes him as a selfless volunteer and a true leader.
“It’s a proud moment when we’re able to reflect on all the outstanding achievements and contributions to rugby league throughout 2024,” NZRL CEO Greg Peters says.
“It’s evident that everyone’s dedication is helping our great game move forward in such a positive direction, and while we congratulate our award winners, we also thank everyone involved.”
