RED AND BLACK REPORT 2024: EDITION NO.25

The Red and Black Report shines a spotlight on Canterbury Rugby League juniors featuring in Australia’s elite and lower-grade competitions.

Canterbury products were in action in the latest rounds of the NRL, NSW Cup, Jersey Flegg Cup (NSWRL under-21s) and NSW Women’s Premiership. Queensland Cup had a competition-wide bye weekend.

NRL

The Warriors suffered an agonising 20-18 defeat in Canberra on Friday night, but proud Burnham Chevaliers Jazz Tevaga made another outstanding contribution off the bench – eight runs for 73 metres and 16 tackles in 26 minutes.

Hornby Panthers product Jordan Riki was impressive in Brisbane Broncos’ crucial, drought-breaking 30-14 victory in Newcastle.

The second-rower made a line-break and racked up 35 tackles in his second match back from suspension – Riki’s 83rd NRL appearance for the club.

Golden point heartbreak befell the Dolphins, pipped 28-26 at Penrith on Sunday afternoon.

But Aranui Eagles junior Jamayne Isaako kicked five-from-five to extend his lead at the top of the NRL’s pointscoring table with 163, along with 13 runs for 136 metres and two line-breaks.

Burnham Chevaliers junior Kodi Nikorima hand a big hand in two Dolphins tries from five-eighth and tallied 21 tackles.

West Coast-bred Kiwi and former Halswell Hornets junior player Griffin Neame churned through nine runs for 84 metres and 17 tackles in 31 minutes off the pine in North Queensland Cowboys’ gritty 20-18 defeat of Canterbury Bulldogs.

NRLW

A tryscorer in Sydenham Swans’ 2023 CRL Women’s Premiership grand final loss, Isabella Waterman has been selected on the wing to debut for defending NRLW champions Newcastle Knights in their opening-round match against Sydney Roosters.

Waterman also played at Super Rugby level for the Hurricanes before joining the Knights.

NSW CUP

West Coast and Halswell junior Callum Donaldson, a Jersey Flegg regular for Canterbury-Bankstown, got another taste of NSW Cup action with 13 minutes off the bench in the Bulldogs’ 32-22 win over Parramatta Eels, making four strong runs.

Versatile NRL regular Daejarn Asi, an Aranui Eagles product, dropped back to NSW Cup with the Eels’ first-grade team on the bye and topped their run-metres count from fullback with 169.

With NSW halfback Mitch Moses ruled out for the season with injury, Asi has been named in the No.7 for the Eels’ NRL side this weekend.

Former Hornby winger and Super Rugby star Solomon Alaimalo was a tryscorer for the second week in a row as his Western Suburbs Magpies side went down 52-16 to St George Illawarra.

NSW WOMEN’S PREMIERSHIP

Canterbury rep and Woolston Rams star Cassie Siataga had a key hand in two tries from halfback as Wentworthville Magpies overwhelmed Central Coast Roosters in their Round 3 fixture, as well as kicking three conversions.

Papanui second-rower Jaydika Tafua was a second-row starter once again for Cronulla Sharks in a 20-14 loss to Mounties.

JERSEY FLEGG CUP

With the Warriors’ NSW Cup team on a bye, Halswell Hornets front-rower Tanner Stowers-Smith help the club’s Flegg team to a 16-4 win over Kaiviti Silktails in Fiji.

Riccarton Knights junior K-Ci Newton-Whare returned to Melbourne’s starting line-up at prop in a 34-18 loss to Canberra.

Hornby forward Felix Faatili came off the bench in Cronulla’s 40-16 win over Newcastle.

Linwood second-rower/centre Te Kaio Cranwell was a tryscorer in a beaten Knights outfit.
