CRL 2024: ROUND 11 CLUB WRAP
The 2024 CRL Whitehead Plumbing & Gas Men’s Premiership continues to surprise on a weekly basis, with Round 11 delivering upsets, form reversals and cliff-hangers that clouded the top-four picture less than a month out from the end of the regular season.
Riccarton Knights bounced back from last week’s 40-point loss in Greymouth and consolidated second spot on the Massetti Cup ladder with a 30-14 win over in-form Hornby Panthers at Crosbie Park.
The home side dominated the first half and led 20-0 when Te Morehu Reweti scored just after the break, but the Panthers staged a comeback to reduce the deficit to just six.
Tries to Knights veterans Kolioo Vailuu and Justin Lynch in the dying minutes wrapped up a vital result.
Fifth-placed Eastern Eagles revived their finals hopes with a momentous 16-10 win over Linwood Keas at Wainoni Park.
An absorbing derby was locked 4-all at halftime and 10-all in the final quarter of the match, before Hazani Fa’amoetauloa scored the match-winner for the Eagles with 13 minutes to go.
The Eagles now trail the Panthers by just two points, while the Keas’ competition lead was also shaved to two points.
Halswell Hornets stuck late to edge out Greymouth Greyhounds 14-10 at Papanui Domain and leapfrog the Panthers into third.
Tries to Brett Rees and Ken Tofilau left the scores tied 4-all at halftime, while the gallant Greyhounds hit the front 10-8 when Regan Stanton’s converted try negated a Nicholas Evans four-pointer.
But Evans crossed again with five minutes on the clock to snatch a much-needed result and deny the Greyhounds the third win of their maiden premiership campaign.
In CRL ISC Sport Canterbury Cup action, the Eagles and Panthers maintained their share of the competition lead, two points ahead of the Hornets after all three teams chalked up wins in Round 11.
Northern Bulldogs are four points clear of the CRL Division One field after a 38-14 win over Addington Magpies, while second-placed Ashburton Barbarians produced a 66-10 win over the visiting Hornets.
Linwood Keas, Sydenham Swans and Hornby Panthers further underlined their CRL Bartercard Women’s Premiership credentials during Sunday’s Round 7 triple-header at Ngā Puna Wai.
Defending champs the Keas carved out a 32-10 win over Woolston Rams, the Swans swamped Burnham Chevaliers 54-0 with Kaylee Tavendale grabbing a hat-trick, and Kyra-Lee Westland racked up 26 points as the Panthers powered to a 62-0 victory over Addington Magpies.
