CRL 2024: ROUND 10 CLUB WRAP

Greymouth Greyhounds carved out the most impressive victory of their short CRL Whitehead Plumbing and Gas Men’s Premiership tenure at Wingham Park, allowing Linwood Keas to move four points clear at the top of the Massetti Cup ladder while Hornby Panthers rose to third spot with four rounds remaining.

The plucky Greyhounds went into Round 10 with one win from nine outings but powered to an emphatic 40-0 win over second-placed Riccarton Knights in the second Greymouth-hosted match of the season.

The home side got off to a flying start and led 26-0 at halftime, before crossing three more times in the second stanza to complete a stunning eight-tries-to-none result.

The Keas clawed back from a second-half deficit to edge out the Hornets 18-16 at Halswell Domain.

The scores were locked 10-all at halftime, with Asomau Ausage’s try soon after the break giving the Hornets their first lead of the match. But Sakiua Lomanikaya’s second four-pointer and a go-ahead try to Maoluma Sakaria clinched the nail-biting win for the Keas.

That result and a 28-16 away win against Eastern Eagles saw the Panthers move up another place on the table.

The Eagles led 6-4 after 20 minutes but the Panthers struck twice to open up a 14-6 halftime advantage.

Hornby kept the hosts at arm’s length during a seesawing second half as Kyan Rosie, Sincere Harraway and Champ Betham found their way across the stripe.

A three-way tie for the CRL ISC Sport Canterbury Cup lead has developed after Hornby Panthers pipped Eastern Eagles 18-16 and Halswell Hornets defeated Linwood Keas 28-16. The Eagles, Panthers and Hornets are level with 7-3 records.

Papanui Tigers moved into outright fourth with a 16-8 win over Riccarton Knights in Greymouth.

In CRL Division One action, Northern Bulldogs kicked three points clear of the field via a 22-20 eclipse of second-placed Woolston Rams, while Burnham Chevaliers tipped up third-placed Ashburton Barbarians 24-22.

Papanui Tigers leapfrogged Shirley Hawks into fifth spot with a 30-18 win in the teams’ clash at Papanui Domain.

New CRL Bartercard Women’s Premiership entrants Addington Magpies chalked up their first win in a 28-26 thriller against Eastern Eagles in Sunday’s Round 6 clash.

The Eagles led 26-16 late in the second half at Wainoni Park, but a try to Nella Ngahuru and a second of the afternoon to Bayli Rapira – who converted both – saw the Magpies snatch victory.

Meanwhile, Iokapeta Fetu scored a first-half hat-trick and Kyra-Lee Westland kicked eight goals in Hornby Panthers’ 56-12 defeat of Woolston Rams at Leslie Park.
