RED AND BLACK REPORT 2024: EDITION NO.16

The Red and Black Report shines a spotlight on Canterbury Rugby League juniors featuring in Australia’s elite and lower-grade competitions.

Canterbury products were in action in the latest rounds of the NRL, NSW Cup and Queensland Cup. The Jersey Flegg Cup (NSWRL under-21s) had a bye weekend.

 

NRL

Hornby product Jordan Riki played another big hand in a victory for the injury-hit Brisbane Broncos, racking up 40 tackles and 13 runs for 99 metres in the back-row in a 13-12 eclipse of Manly Sea Eagles.

West Coast Kiwi and former Halswell junior player Griffin Neame is flourishing in a starting role with North Queensland Cowboys and toiled for 114 metres on 10 carries and 20 tackles in Saturday’s 28-22 win over South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Burnham junior Jazz Tevaga played a monumental role in the Warriors’ stunning 22-20 upset of Penrith Panthers on Sunday.

The compact forward got through an unbelievable 21 runs for 158 metres in just 42 minutes, along with a team-high six tackle-breaks and 21 tackles.

Aranui product Daejarn Asi returned to the top grade in what was a tough outing for Parramatta Eels, going down 48-16 to Melbourne Storm.

But the five-eighth made 89 metres from 14 runs, clocked up 18 tackles, did the bulk of the kicking in general play and landed two conversions.

The Dolphins keep winning – outlasting Wests Tigers 24-12 in the Magic Round closer – and Burnham junior Kodi Nikorima and Aranui’s Jamayne Isaako continue to play a prominent role.

Five-eight Nikorima had 74 running metres, 21 tackles, a line-break and a line-break assist, while Isaako churned up 177 metres from 18 runs and kicked four conversions from as many attempts.

Marking Isaako, ex-Hornby winger and Super Rugby star Solomon Alaimalo made his third NRL appearance for the Tigers and produced a brilliant try assist, along with 11 runs for 87 metres.

 

NSW CUP

The Warriors are climbing the NSW Cup courtesy of a five-match winning streak, downing competition leaders Penrith 22-10 on Saturday.

Linwood product Makaia Tafua is developing into a tryscoring machine at hooker, burrowing over for the opening four-pointer of the match while also reeling off 39 tackles.

Halswell prop Tanner Stowers-Smith was a strong contributor again, making 74 metres from seven carries and 25 tackles.

QLD CUP

Powerhouse former Hornby and Canterbury Bulls forward Caius Faatili suffered a 30-22 loss when he came up against his former Wynnum Manly Seagulls teammates, but he nevertheless made a big impression off the bench for Sunshine Coast Falcons.

Faatili played 43 minutes and tallied 12 runs for 136 metres and made 22 tackles.
