CANTERBURY SQUADS ANNOUNCED FOR SOUTH ISLAND GIRLS TOURNAMENT
Canterbury’s 18s, 16s and 14s girls squads have been named for the 2023 South Island youth tournament, which will be held in Oamaru from July 1-3.
Our region’s future women’s stars are set to take on the most promising players from Otago, Southland and West Coast across the three age-groups.
Canterbury’s 18s squad includes eight members of the 2022 Scorpions’ 16s girls wider squad selected after last year’s South Island youth tournament – including Dejah Tuliau, who was named MVP as Canterbury took out the South Island 18s Nines tournament in Christchurch earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Dormay Laufiso – MVP in the South Island 16s Nines tournament from Canterbury’s winning team – is among the 16s squad chosen to travel south in a month’s time.
In CRL’s youth night competitions this season, Hornby Panthers, Northern Bulldogs and Riccarton Knights 14s teams are playing weekly ‘game of three halves’ fixtures, the Knights, Bulldogs, Linwood Keas and Shirley Hawks make up the 16s grade, and the Panthers and Keas 18s have had two matches against one another so far.
“It’s been great to see the girls’ progression during the season so far,” Canterbury Rugby League Director of Football Jamie Lester says.
“We have excellent coaches and support staff leading the way for these girls and I’m excited to see them come together for Canterbury at the South Island tournament.”
Canterbury 16s won the Tessa Te Kahu Trophy and Canterbury 14s earned the Somma Te Kahu Trophy – both prizes named after Canterbury’s celebrated Kiwi Ferns sisters – as champions at the corresponding tournament staged at Ngā Puna Wai in 2022.
