CANTERBURY SQUADS ANNOUNCED FOR SOUTH ISLAND BOYS TOURNAMENT
Four squads of Canterbury boys teams will make the trek down to Oamaru next month for the 2023 South Island youth tournament.
Our provinces top talent across the 13s (who are competing in the 14s competition), 14s, 16s and 18s grades will take on teams from Aoraki, West Coast, Otago and Southland from July 8-10 at Centennial Park.
Canterbury is aiming to defend its titles won in the 14s, 16s and 18s divisions in last year’s South Island youth tournament held at Ngā Puna Wai.
The Canterbury 18s side includes 2022 NZRL Schoolboys Tournament Team selection Noah Harmer-Campbell, 2022 NZRL 16s Tournament Team selection Ezekiel Faga-Ieti, 2022 NZRL U18s Boys Tournament Team selection Te Kaia Cranwell, and Dion Fong-Yip, who has been making an impressive in the Massetti Cup with Hornby this season.
There’s extra motivation for the 18s following yesterday’s announcement a South Island Scorpions side will be chosen post-tournament to take on the visiting Canberra Raiders under-18s in Christchurch the following weekend, while places in the Scorpions squads for the NZRL 16s and 18s tournaments later this year are also up for grabs.

“It’s been great to see such wonderful talent across our boys youth grades this year,” Canterbury Rugby League Director of Football Jamie Lester says.
“I know that the selectors have had a difficult job selecting their squads and some talented players have missed out initially.
“Canterbury representative teams have a long and proud history and I’m looking forward to seeing each team competing in the South Island tournament.
“It will be great to see how the Canterbury 13s match up against the Canterbury 14s. I know each team will represent the province strongly and best of luck to the 16s and 18s boys vying for a spot on the South Island Scorpions teams going to Nationals in September.”
