RED AND BLACK REPORT 2019: EDITION NO.24

Each week the Red and Black Report will keep you up to date with how our Canterbury Rugby League products are performing in Australia’s elite and lower-grade competitions.

NRL

Kodi Nikorima set up a brilliant try for Ken Maumalo with a sizzling line-break and kick ahead, but the five-eighth was otherwise disappointingly quiet in the Warriors’ 31-12 loss to South Sydney.

Fellow Burnham junior Jazz Tevaga made 10 runs and topped the tackle count with a mammoth 52 after starting at lock.

As well as landing four goals from as many attempts, Aranui product Jamayne Isaako slotted the match-winning field in golden point as Brisbane scored a vital 17-16 win over Parramatta.

CANTERBURY CUP NSW

Fa’amanu Brown started at halfback and made 85 metres and 16 tackles in Canterbury’s 24-22 loss to St George Illawarra.

Matt McIlwrick played 80 minutes at hooker in Wentworthville’s 26-16 victory over South Sydney, racking up 56 metres and 36 tackles.

Brown and McIlwrick will both feature in the finals series starting this weekend.

INTRUST SUPER CUP QLD

Versatile back Daejarn Asi made his second ISC appearance off the bench for Townsville Blackhawks, getting 40 minutes of game-time in a 22-20 win over Easts Tigers and impressing with four runs for 41 metres.

Asi scored a try when debuted on the wing in a 40-18 loss to Sunshine Coast Falcons a fortnight ago.

Hooker Sheldon Pitama’s purple patch of form continued, scoring a try in the first half of Redcliffe Dolphins’ 48-10 drubbing of Mackay Cutters.

Promising forward Jordan Riki made a second-row start in Norths Devils’ 30-6 loss to Wynnum Manly Seagulls.

The Devils, Dolphins and Blackhawks have both qualified for the ISC finals series.

JERSEY FLEGG CUP (NSW U20s)

Front-rower Sua Ailoilo scored a rare try as the Bulldogs thumped Victoria Thunderbolts 42-18.

Joseph Taipari helped Parramatta to a 40-18 win over North Sydney from five-eighth.

HASTINGS DEERING COLTS (QLD U20s)

Winger Zinzan Martin scored the opening try of the table-topping Blackhawks’ 34-14 beat-down of Easts Tigers, while prop Griffin Neame crossed in the second half.

Seagulls winger Jalen Tangiiti-Turner scored for the second week in a row, posting a first-half try in a 54-22 defeat of the Devils.
