LOCAL KIDS WARM TO MANLY STARS AS WINTER BLAST HITS CANTERBURY

The visiting Manly Sea Eagles braved Christchurch’s wintry weather to get out to a host of local schools on Wednesday, spreading their message of inclusiveness and positive behaviour before taking on the Warriors in their NRL Round 14 clash at AMI Stadium on Saturday.

Manly captain Daly Cherry-Evans, Kiwis and Tonga rep Addin Fonua-Blake and Hamilton-born forward Lloyd Perrett were asked some curly questions at Cathedral College.

Asked who the hardest player they’ve had to tackle was, Cherry-Evans nominated his former Queensland and Australia teammate Greg Inglis, while Fonua-Blake and Perrett both said Cowboys wrecking ball Jason Taumalolo.

The players answered questions about their biggest setbacks and greatest achievements thoughtfully, but managed to sidestep others about more private matters – like how much they get paid.

Cherry-Evans said Canterbury’s polar blast was taking some adjusting to.

“I wouldn’t say it was a shock, we knew what we were coming into, but it was a hard (training) session considering how cold it was,” the skipper said.

“We’re going to have to take into account what the weather conditions are going to be like on Saturday. We certainly feel we’ve got a side that can change around dependent on the weather with how we play.

“Weather-wise it’s been really hard to understand how cold it is, but again it certainly hasn’t stopped us from training hard and it won’t stop us from getting around town and checking it out.

“This place has had a lot going on in the last 10 years so to get around town and see it first-hand will be really quite interesting.”

The trio then ventured down the road to Linwood North School, where they were treated to a wonderful welcome song.

Meanwhile, long-serving Sea Eagles winger Jorge Taufua and Auckland-born rookie forward Taniela Paseka headed out to multiple schools, including a huge turnout at Halswell Primary.
