Via The Star – by Sophie Cornish

Haeata Community Campus’ rugby league coach Te Iwi Ngaro Wairau has been named assistant coach of the New Zealand Residents team.

Mr Wairau will assist head coach Rod Ratu for the team’s clash against New Zealand Maori in Auckland on October 14.

He was also head coach of the Southland Rams this season, and is a talent scout for the Warriors.

Mr Wairau said the residents’ appointment was his biggest coaching role so far.

“My goal is always to learn more and so (my goal is) to learn off Rod and learn off the players.”

Previously Mr Wairau has been a development officer for Canterbury Rugby League, director of the Aranui High School rugby league academy and has a senior club coach qualification for the Aranui Eagles.
