COVID 19 UPDATE 6 April 2020
Kia Ora Koutou,
We hope you and your family are coping well during this time and no doubt have other priorities to work through during this lockdown, this is to provide an update on developments regarding rugby league and some decisions from New Zealand Rugby League pertaining to Representative and International rugby league for 2020.
Please see the extract below that was sent to the Zones and Districts:
The NZRL Board met on Friday evening and confirmed the cancellation of all NZRL Tournaments and Competitions for this year. This is following concerns expressed by some of you regarding the undue additional financial burden this would place on you given the very uncertain revenue lines at present.
ii) It is also in recognition that the rebuild of the game will be from the grassroots up and representative football should not be the priority at present.
iii) As previously advised international matches have also been cancelled for 2020 at this stage.
This means that the NZRL Youth tournament 15’s and 17’s, the NZRL Premiership for the Canterbury Bulls and new Women’s Premiership competition are effectively cancelled.
The delayed start to the 2020 Club season is still scheduled for 2nd May and this will still be reviewed 17 April and is subject to Government restrictions and guidelines. There is every chance that the Club season could be delayed further and CRL have a number of contingencies planned and will be in consultation with Club Presidents when a clearer start time or with alternative formats depending on time available.
As you will probably appreciate there is so many unknown variables with this pandemic and as such this is the only information that we can offer at this time.
Please keep safe.
